WATERCOLOR CLASS

Tuesdays, August 9-September 20 (no class week of September 6) (six weeks)

10am-12noon  Ages: 18 & up

Whether you know what a wash is or not, if you are looking to expand your knowledge of this magical medium, here’s a course to encourage you. Learn to paint water colors that express your intent and learn to evaluate and improve your own work.  Class includes short lecture/demos and plenty of painting time on subjects of your choosing.  Line, composition, value, color, texture, lost and found edges- discover what they mean and how to use them. Advanced students will get plenty of personal attention, and explore some new ideas about painting in watercolor too. This session will venture into some experimental areas – abstract and non-objective painting.

Beginning students will develop fundamental knowledge of materials and techniques used in painting with traditional transparent watercolor. Intermediate students will enjoy learning more about the tools and techniques of traditional watercolor and how to use them to their best advantage to establish a personal style. Students will work with still life, landscape, and personal photographs. Selection of brushes, paper, the properties of color (hue, value, & intensity), the use of contrast, lost & found edges and other techniques to establish depth and create an interesting painting will be covered. From basic through advanced, the goal is to create work that excites you and expresses what you want to say. The course will address drawing, basic techniques, color theory, image and composition, atmospheric perspective and reflections. Students will paint from their own photos, still life and landscape. The objective is to provide all the skills, knowledge and confidence to continue in intermediate and advanced artistic expression in watercolor.

A materials list is available upon registration; basic supplies will also be available for use the first night of class. Students are responsible for their supplies

Instructor: Michael Farrar    Fee: $75

OIL PAINTING CLASS

Tuesdays, August 9-September 20 (no class week of September 6) (six weeks)

2-4 PM   Ages: 18 & up

Join Michael Farrar and explore the fun of working with oils. Beginning students will learn solid fundamentals, including choosing canvas and prepare the surface, selection and care of, brushes, organizing your palette and more.  Learn about composition and design and techniques that will help you achieve different effects. Make balanced and exciting finished work.

If you are an intermediate painter or just enjoy the company of other painters, want to loosen up your style, or brush up on your techniques, this is also a class for you. Focus will be the technical and expressive aspects of oil painting.  Learn to paint pictures that express your intent and to critique your own paintings with an artist’s vocabulary.

You can accomplish a more spontaneous look and still retain a certain amount of detail for realism. Learn to use a limited palette for a wide range of colors while retaining a balanced and harmonious painting as you develop your own style of oil painting. Students will work with still life and their own photos. Regular demos and individual help will take you further on your journey.

Call for a materials list, or bring what you have on hand to the first class; some materials will be available for the first class. Others materials may be purchased following the first class. Students are responsible for their supplies. Small class size allows plenty of one on one instruction.
