Our Own...Evelyn Simmons
Receives The TAP Heart Award!!

TAP (Total Action Against Poverty) announced the winners of its 2011 Heart Awards. The Heart is an award for Humanitarian Achievement and it was presented to our own Evelyn Simmons!!  A banquet held in the fellowship hall of Granbery United Methodist Church in Covington was the setting for the presentation of the award!!

Evelyn has been involved in several organizations since relocating to the Highlands. She was involved in the local school systems as a teacher in the Weekday Religious Education organization for 23 years. After retiring as a WRE teacher, she continued to serve on the WRE Board and was a state WRE supervisor for many years. She is also a member of the Alleghany Retired Teachers Association and served as treasurer for several years. Evelyn is a member of Granbery Church, where she is secretary of the Berean Circle, a member of the Pastor Relations, Member Care and Witness committees. She is involved with taking communion to shut-ins and attends weekly Bible studies.
She has also served as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and has assisted with the Christmas Mother program as well as working the voting polls. In addition, she also volunteers at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center and serves on the Board and is a member of the Volunteer Auxiliary at Lewis Gale Hospital-Alleghany.
Evelyn is always pleasant, courteous and willing to help others, said Delores Turner in her letter nominating Simmons for the award. "Although she just celebrated her 80th birthday, she ecan match the work of those much younger. Evelyn is a small person in stature but has a big heart."
